Why does my stomach hurt from coffee? The expert explained the effect of lactose on the body15.09.2022
It is extremely rare, but it happens that a person from childhood cannot tolerate lactose. In this case, this is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease, when an infant from birth has either no lactase at all, or the activity of the enzyme is reduced. One of the symptoms of the disease is watery diarrhea after breastfeeding.
However, it is important to understand that even in the first months of life, children often have physiological malabsorption (a complex of clinical manifestations caused by violations of cavitary, parietal, membrane digestion and transport in the small intestine, leading to metabolic shifts) – and in this case, the baby’s body is simply cannot fully absorb lactose from breast milk.
In adults, secondary lactase deficiency is also possible. It appears when the intestinal walls are damaged, which happens for the following reasons:
– celiac disease;
– Crohn’s disease;
– Ulcerative colitis;
– Antibacterial drugs.
