“I didn’t even think about leaving somewhere”: Sergey Penkin about resentment against Alla Pugacheva, love for luxury and Western show business25.06.2022
“Nothing can stop us,” says Sergei Penkin. His plans are painted not just for months, but for years to come. Now the singer is preparing a collaboration with a mysterious young artist (but with whom he has not yet spoken), he does not plan to leave Russia and writes new songs.
Sergey Penkin spoke in an interview with Woman.ru about the grievances that he harbors against Alla Pugacheva, heavy weight loss and whether his voice, listed in the Guinness Book of Records, fails him.
Woman.ru: In recent months, many artists have left the country, why did you decide to stay?
Sergei Penkin: I didn’t even think about leaving somewhere, I am really a patriot of my Motherland. Although, in truth, the authorities never really liked me: this is evidenced by the fact that in my 35-year career I have not had a single title. But this does not worry me much, because the main thing is the audience who go to my concerts.
But Chulpan Khamatova recently called her title of People’s Artist “nonsense and a Soviet relic.” What do you think about it?
Sergei Penkin: Here I do not quite agree. Despite the fact that this title, apart from an increase in pension, does not give anything, it would still be good for oneself and for some kind of status in our country. Something like – you appreciated. But we understand that the main assessment is the ruble of the viewer who came to your performance.
You always spoke very warmly about Alla Pugacheva. What kind of relationship do you maintain now after she moved?
Sergei Penkin: As for Alla, for me she was the first, as always, and remains so. We had very little contact, and to be honest, I always resented her for never inviting me to her Christmas Meetings. It seemed to me that I would decorate this show with my voice and costumes, but she always preferred Philip Kirkorov.
